Celebrate International Day of Forests with Yaji Spice

This March 21, celebrate the importance of forests with Yaji Spice on International Day of Forests. Forests are ecosystems that regulate climate, support biodiversity, and provide resources like timber. They also help absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which helps combat climate change. Here at Yaji Spice, we take great care to look after the earth, including forests. Our collection of spices is organic and is sourced in a sustainable way.

How Does Yaji Spice Source Spices in a Sustainable Way?

Yaji Spice sources all of our spices in a sustainable way that honors the environment. We employ regenerative agriculture, reforestation, and upcycling to help keep the land healthy. We’ll dive deep into what each of these strategies means in the rest of this blog post.

What Is Regenerative Agriculture?

According to the Nature Conservancy, regenerative agriculture is “an approach to growing food that seeks to actively restore nature in the process.” This includes enhancing soil health and biodiversity while also improving water quality and climate resilience. Regenerative agriculture gives back resources to nature, including water and nutrients.

Yaji Spice uses regenerative agriculture to grow and harvest spices. We’re careful to restore nature when we’re farming, giving back to the land.

What Are Reforestation Methods?

Yaji Spice also uses reforestation methods to help keep the earth healthy. Reforestation is simply the process of replanting an area with trees, according to Oxford Languages. Reforestation is one important way that Yaji Spice gives back to the environment.

Each woman farmer we work with is required to plant at least four trees, whether they are cashew, locust bean, or shea trees. Since we have groups of 10 women, that’s 40 trees planted per group. And there are 100-200 groups of women per village, meaning that a total of 4,000-8,000 trees are planted per village.

Reforestation reduces climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, improves water and air quality, restores biodiversity, and prevents soil erosion. The simple act of replanting trees has lasting consequences.

What Is Upcycling?

Upcycling occurs when instead of throwing away a byproduct, it gets reused. Yaji Spice uses upcycling when we produce groundnut oil and use the byproduct to create a snack, Kuli-Kuli. Kuli-Kuli is a West African snack popular in Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, and northern Cameroon. It is the base ingredient for our Suya spice blend.

Another example of upcycling occurs when we produce shea butter. The byproducts are used to make briquettes, replacing firewood for cooking. Upcycling is important because it reduces waste and promotes creativity.

Conclusion

Yaji Spice employs regenerative agriculture, reforestation, and upcycling to have a positive effect on the environment. By growing food in a way that restores the land, replanting trees, and reducing waste by using byproducts in creative ways, we can do our part to help heal the land. Our spices are sustainably sourced, giving you peace of mind as you browse our online spices store and order spices to be delivered to your home.
