Celebrate Sweetest Day with Yaji Spice

It’s the Sweetest Day! This October 19, celebrate with us here at Yaji Spice by doing a small, kind gesture for another. Maybe you can hand-make a card or frame a favorite photo for someone. You could also give flowers or gift a special someone spices from our online spice store. Whatever you choose to do, you can brighten someone’s day and pass on the sweetness.

History of Sweetest Day

Celebrated on the third Saturday of October, Sweetest Day has been around since 1921. At the time, Cleveland’s candy companies teamed up to give away 20,000 boxes of candy to the vulnerable (orphans and the elderly). Early in the 1930s, movie stars such as Theda Bara and Ann Pennington distributed candy to help the cause. Over the years, the holiday spread from Ohio to neighboring Midwest states. Today the biggest Sweetest Day cities are Detroit and Cleveland.

What to Give on Sweetest Day

Sweets are a great staple of the holiday, but what else can you give? Why not give a loved one spices from Yaji Spice? We sell tart, floral white hibiscus and red hibiscus for dessert recipes like hibiscus rice pudding. We also have a line of spice blends that offer both savory and sweet tastes. Consider our collection of versatile spices and herbs for your gifting needs. With the perfectly chosen gift, you can brighten up your loved one’s day.

Beyond that, consider giving any hand-made gift, such as a painting if you’re an artist or a short story if you’re a writer. Or you could give your loved one a knitted scarf or bouquet of flowers. Even better yet, you could create something sweet in the kitchen. Anything with sentimental value will go a long way. Choose a gift that could become a beloved keepsake.

Since Sweetest Day is sweet, though, first consider making a dessert. You can give it to a loved one as a gift. Our hibiscus rice pudding is a mouthwatering sweet treat that will hit the spot. It only takes 40 minutes to prep and cook, and the process is fun and easy. It involves simmering milk, sugar, Yaji dried hibiscus flowers, and Yaji Atare in a saucepan, then reducing the heat to low. Below is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoon dried hibiscus flowers
  • ¼ tablespoon Yaji Atare
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine milk, sugar, Yaji dried hibiscus petalsYaji Ataré and vanilla extract. Heat over medium until it begins to simmer.
  2. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture steep for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture to remove the hibiscus petals.
  3. Return the strained mixture to the saucepan and add the cooked white rice.
  4. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and the rice is creamy.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  6. Serve warm or chilled, garnished with chopped pistachios.

Instead of garnishing with chopped pistachios, you can also add whipped cream on top. Pair the finished pudding with fresh strawberries or blueberries. They will add a fresh blast of flavor to complement the dish. Hibiscus rice pudding with fresh fruit on the side is the sweet treat you or your loved ones need today.  Enjoy!
