Celebrate Earth Day with us! Yaji Spice is committed to sustainability and ethical sourcing from women-led farms. We farm via organic practices and improve biodiversity and soil health. Each acre of land is protected from floods and desertification and provides food and economic security.
To take care of the land, women farmers practice reforestation, regenerative agriculture, and upcycling. Besides the 80,000 acres of land regenerated through agroforestry, Yaji Spice also encourages plant-based eating with products like our veggie blend. The spice blend delivers plenty of heat and is often paired with plant-based dishes.
Why Is a Plant-Based Diet Good for the Environment?
Yaji Spice’s veggie blend is an easy way to practice eco-conscious eating. Plant-based eating is good for the earth because it requires less land, water, and energy resources than animal-based diets.
Plant-based diets help preserve forests and ecosystems by reducing the demand for animal agriculture. Animal agriculture contributes to deforestation and habitat loss through its use of vast amounts of land for grazing and growing feed crops.
Plant-based diets also reduce the amount of water needed. Between watering crops and providing drinking water for the livestock, animal-based diets require significantly more water than plant-based diets.
What Does Science Say?
According to Plant-Based Dietary Patterns for Human and Planetary Health by Joshua Gibbs and Francesco P. Cappuccio, transitioning to plant-based diets can have a profound effect on the environment:
Transitioning to plant-based diets (PBDs) has the potential to reduce diet-related land use by 76%, diet-related greenhouse gas emissions by 49%, eutrophication by 49%, and green and blue water use by 21% and 14%, respectively, whilst garnering substantial health co-benefits.
Eutrophication is caused by runoff from the land and is characterized by excessive richness of nutrients in a lake or other body of water. It results in “dense growth of plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen,” according to Oxford Languages.
Green and blue water use also decreased. According to the Water Footprint Calculator, the green water footprint refers to “the rainwater and soil moisture consumed by plants and crops in their cultivation.” The blue water footprint “refers to irrigation from surface water and groundwater that is consumed during cultivation.”
In other words, transitioning to plant-based diets has the potential to reduce diet-related land use, diet-related greenhouse gas emissions, eutrophication, and water use. Simply put, choosing to eat non-animal products helps take care of the earth.
