Fourth of July History

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress. It officially declared the 13 American colonies free of Great Britain. The day marked the beginning of the United States of America as an independent nation.

Independence Day is a great day to celebrate liberty, freedom, and equality. Besides brushing up on your history, there are several other ways to celebrate, including parades, festivals, fireworks, and family cookouts.

Parades

Many cities offer Fourth of July parades that feature colorful marching bands and elaborate, larger-than-life floats. There are several notable parades scattered across the United States that bring communities together, including:

  • Bristol, Rhode Island
  • Canonsburg, Pennsylvania
  • Alameda, California

Bristol, Rhode Island claims to offer the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration with its first observance in 1785. There are prizes for the Most Patriotic, Most Beautiful, and Most Original floats. There’s also a Top Military Honors and Best in the Parade Awards.

Canonsburg, Pennsylvania draws crowds that number in the thousands, with the parade beginning at Cavasina Drive and ending at Bluff Street. After the parade, there’s a free pool admission, face painting, rock climbing, and moon bouncing.

The longest Fourth of July parade can be found in Alameda, California with a total route of 3.3 miles. The parade attracts more than 150 entries and 2,500 participants.

There are many, many more Fourth of July parades across the country. For a parade in your area, simply Google “Fourth of July parades near me.”

Festivals

Fourth of July festivals are scattered throughout the country, often ending with a fireworks show.

Fireworks

The best fireworks shows across the nation include:

  • Washington DC, which puts on a fireworks show on the National Mall. The show includes a live concert put on by PBS, called A Capitol Fourth.
  • St. Louis, MO, which puts on a patriotic display of fireworks over three days (July 4-6) and releases 15,000 pounds of fireworks into the air.
  • New York City, NY, which shoots fireworks over the East River in an annual fireworks display.
  • Boston, MA, which combines an annual Boston Pops concert with a fireworks display on the Charles River.
  • Philadelphia, PA, which has a festival that is known as the Fourth of July Jam and Fireworks concert, combining catchy songs with a fireworks show.
  • New Orleans, LA, which shoots off fireworks from barges on the Mississippi River. The closer to the river you are, the better the view.

A family cookout is another fun and simple way to celebrate the Fourth of July. Break out the grill and make a quick and easy dinner of grilled chicken, burgers, or hot dogs. When making grilled meats, be certain to use Suya spice blend or No-Nut Suya spice blend, which deliver a spicy kick to the dish.
